Ski resorts near Zurich
There’s lots of great ski resorts near Zurich and you really are spoilt for choice so we’ve tried to make it easier for you wit some resort starters – in summary:
If you want a lively popular resort with apres ski – Davos, Engelberg, Flumersberg (all within 1.5 hours), Klosters and Grindelworld are suited.
If you want a quiet resort - the five resorts below within an hour are all suited.
Ski resorts within 1 hours of Zurich Airport
Bad Ragaz – a small ski area with 8 ski lifts and 14 runs. It shares it’s ski area with Wang and has a traditional village feel to it.
Beckenried – with over 14 ski lifts transporting up to 10,000 skiers per hour and over 40km of downhill skiing. It has around 15 pistes to choose from.
Einsiedeln – very small ski area with 3 blue runs but is a short drive from the Hoch-Ybrig Plus pass area access cable car up the valley at Brunni
Grüsch – a low altitude pretty village resort with lots of fake snow on the 11 ski pistes serviced by 8 lifts. Great for snowboarding.
Sattel-Hochstuckli – 15 ski pistes which are best for intermediates at around 1600m. The Mythen Ski region links to the Hoch-Ybrig area, giving a total of 100 KM of linked trails which is good to expand your ski routes to.
Ski resorts within 1.5 hours of Zurich Airport
Andermatt – Perfect for intermediates. with 13 ski lifts, 20km of cross-country trails, and 56km of downhill skiing with a high point of 2900m. As one of Switzerland’s oldest ski villages it is small with not much nightlife.
Davos – a large town resort and well known, Davos is split into 2 areas; Davos Dorf and Davos Platz. It is excellent for experts skiers and boarders alike with 320km of pistes and 38 ski lifts. The après ski and night life is very lively with over 20 bars.
Elm - Picturesque old village and year round tourist destination with around 14 runs.
Engelberg - Around a 1.5 hour drive from Zurich, Engelberg is a premier ski resort with skiing for all levels. There are 23 lifts, the highest of which tops 3,000m, 41km of cross-country trails, and over 80km of downhill chutes to choose from.
Flumserberg – With 17 ski lifts available, Flumserberg is one of the largest ski resorts situated within an hour and a halfs drive of Zurich. The highest lift takes you up to 2,220m and there are 20km of cross-country trails to choose from.
Klosters - The Swiss ski resort is part of the Rega Pass Area Ski Area and has direct access to 307km of downhill skiing, with 97 individual pistes, served by 52 ski lifts. With the correct pass you can ski into Davos.
Laax - part of the Flims-Laax-Falera Ski Area with access to 103 individual ski pistes. It is an exceptionally good resort for all abilities of skiers, including experts with 80km of black runs. Après ski’s is pretty good too.
Lenzerheide – Valbella – great for intermediates. The Swiss ski resort of Lenzerheide – Valbella has direct access to 155km of downhill skiing, with 58 individual pistes, served by 40 ski lifts. With pistes above 2500 metres, skiing and snowboarding is guaranteed all season.
Savognin – great for snowboarders and intermediate skiers. The Swiss ski resort of Savognin has direct access to 80km of downhill skiing, with 24 individual pistes, served by 14 ski lifts.
Wildhaus - An attractive and friendly village with 20km of skiing available.
Ski resorts within 2 hours of Zurich Airport
Adelboden – Picturesque traditional Swiss resort but with an unusually large modern ski area linked to Lenk’s. Thoroughly modern outlook includes a dedicated ski school. Great après ski and 177 pistes.
Brigels-Waltensburg-Andiast - The Swiss ski resort of Brigels-Waltensburg-Andiast has direct access to 25 individual pistes, served by 11 ski lifts. Great for intermediates.
Flims – The Swiss ski resort of Flims is part of the Flims-Laax-Falera Ski Area with access to 103 individual pistes. In addition to the skiing in Flims itself (58 pisted ski runs), the appropriate ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Flims-Laax-Falera ski resorts of Falera and Laax. Flims is directly linked by Ski Lift to the ski areas of Falera and Laax.
Grindelwald - A very pretty, historic, year round resort and the largest in the Jungfrau ski area, which includes resorts of Wengen and Mürren. It shares a ski area with Wengen, but also has its own First ski area. Great for beginners, intermediates and après ski.
Lauterbrunnen – Located on the valley floor between Murren and Wengen this is the ideal resort for those wanting real choice with their Jungfrau Region Pass, especially as it includes Interlaken further down the valley. Only one hour from Berne airport.
Lech – In Austria, Lech is an expensive and quiet exclusive resort. Ideal if you want 5 star hotels
Mürren – A Pretty car-free village linked by mountain railway (since 1891) to Wengen and Grindelwald and other Jungfrau ski resorts. The first Alpine Ski World Championships were staged here in 1931 by the Ski Club of Great Britain.
Obersaxen - Part of a ski region that links Val Lumnezia and Piz Mundaun. The men’s and women’s FIS Super G events have been staged here in recent years and the 1998 Swiss Alpine Skiing Championships also took place at this resort. Good for snowboarding and not après ski.
Sedrun - Historic village with more than 14 chapels and churches in the vicinity, the ancient Romansh dialect is still spoken here. Apart from extensive skiing opportunities there is an indoor pool, bowling, ice skating and sledging possibilities. 19 pistes here.
Sörenberg - Sitting at the foot of the Brienzer Rothon, Sörenberg is a typically picturesque Swiss ski resort. More unusual attractions include an Alpine horn blowing school, a yodel club and cheese making tours.
