Austria
Austria is famous for its quality beer and lively après ski, however the slopes are amongst the best in Europe with picturesque villages and traditional family run hotels. If you are looking for lively resorts head to St Anton, Saalbach & Hinterglemm, Solden and Zell Am. There are plenty of quieter resorts though, with Lech-Zurs suiting families and couples after something a bit quieter.
Tips when booking a holiday to Austria
- An ‘Austrian twin’ bed is two separate mattresses and bed linen on one large bed frame but shared headboard.
- As a predominantly a Catholic country most villages have churches which ring their bells early every Sunday morning.
- Sauna areas in Austria are predominantly naked only zones. It is considered unhygienic to wear a swimming costume.
- Their food is hearty and delicious, with local favourites ‘Tiroler Grostl’, which is a combination of potatoes, onions, bacon and cheese cooked in a pan. Breakfast can be a selection of cold meats and cheeses or muesli. In general the Austrian resort favours meat and the vegetarian in the group may struggle with Pork, veal and dumplings dominating most menus.
- Ski hire shops classify child and youth skis by length of ski not age. To work out your the length of ski your child requires is to take the height of your child and minus 30cm.
